1. Tell us about your book(s):
I write “edutainment” material that is both fun and educational. Ideally, my material will be shared between parents, grandparents, teachers and caregivers spending time with the children they love helping them become their best version. Everything I create (songs, videos, journals, books, coloring books, posters, bookmarks etc.) reinforce the 8 positive habits outlined in my STAND OUT! STAND OUT! Framework.
S trive for excellence
T ake great care of yourself
A lways do what you say you’ll do
N otice and tell when others do well
D o what’s right
O pen up your mind
U se your talents to do good things
T reat everything with respect and be kind
2. Is there a story behind the name of your business?
For as long as I can remember, I have understood that every person is unique, different from the rest and I really appreciate the uniquenesses in individuals. This is also true with the kids I teach, where each is one of a kind and this is one of the things I love most about being a teacher. By helping students develop positive habits and encouraging them to discover their unique natural talents, my greatest hope for them is that they will develop these natural gifts over time and share them with others to make a positive difference. Thus the STAND OUT! STAND OUT! Call to action.
3. How did you come to be a professional writer?
I began creating little songs as early as 8 years old. I also did a fair amount of journalling after college. Educationally, I've been writing in my class rooms with students for 30 years. However, professionally, in 2022, I learned how to self-publish through KDP, Amazon's publishing service and in September of 2023, I published my first children's picture book How Do You Stand Out? You are Unique. Make a Difference! Since then, I have self-published 11 titles that include a children’s picture book, a bilingual picture book, an inspirational daily quotation collection, journals for children ages 4-8, journals for kids 8 and older and most recently a coloring book!
4. Where do you draw your inspiration?
I've always been inspired when I read about or see human beings accomplishing, creating or doing great things, you know living up to their potential. By doing this, they show others by their example that each of us is capable of doing great things through hardwork, developing our talents and sharing them with the world. I am also inspired by the kids I teach. They are so intelligent, imaginative and have so much potential. With all of the technology available today, I wonder what amazing things they will achieve in the future.
5. Do you have a favorite book that you’ve written so far?
I like all of them for different reasons but because How Do You Stand Out? was my first and sets the ground work for everything that came after it, I am partial to that one. I love the fact that it's also a song and a music lyric video which enables kids with different learning styles to access that important message in different ways.
6. What’s your best seller?
The picturebook How Do You Stand Out? continues to be my best-selling book, though the recently published kindness and positive habit journals #1 & 2 that are companions to it are really gaining traction. I am curious to see how the bilingual version of the book, recently published in English and Spanish, does in the future.
7. Writers read. What genre are you into now?
Oh boy, well quite a bit. I just finished two chapter books written by two local authors I have met at ARIA events, a paranormal thriller The Entrapment by Judy Cosby and a lawyer suspense novel, Million Dollar Men by Joe Salerno. Both were excellent. For professional growth, I am reading a How-To book to help me market my materials and message. Finally, at school I have been reading aloud Magnus Chase the Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan to my students.
8. How long have you been in Rhode Island?
My whole life, 58 years!
9. What do you {heart} about Rhode Island?
Well my family and friends are here in RI, but beyond that I like that we have four seasons. I especially love Autumn! We also have plenty of beaches to visit and we have a ton of good hiking trails too. Finally, we are so lucky to have so much great food here in RI!
10. Favorite place to take out-of-towners?
Beach, hiking and restaurants!
11. Any advice for new/wannabe writers?
As long as you are enjoying it- Just do it! Write what you love to write about in the format that you enjoy. I love writing in rhyme and I enjoy playing with words in a fun way- so that’s how I write.
12. Please include anything else you’d like to add:
I invite anyone reading this to join my email list which you can do on my website and you’ll get a free ebook. Although all of my books are available on Amazon, I’d prefer you come see me in person (events are listed on my website) so I can meet you and sign your book for you! I am looking forward to creating more fun books, songs and videos in the future. Thank you for this opportunity.
