Dining ~ Xaco Taco ~ Providence

Xaco Taco
370 Richmond St.
Providence, Rhode Island

I've been meaning to get to Xaco Taco for months, and finally got the opportunity to check it out.

It occupies the space where Rick's Roadhouse was, and it looks like in a former life it had been an auto repair garage. The lift doors still line the front of the building, separating the indoors from what is probably outdoor seating in warmer months.

The decor and atmosphere is casual and fun, with nods to both the Mexican food theme and the building's former life as a garage, including a pretty sweet turquoise VW van in the back, skeeball in the event room, and a foosball table by the Tequila bar.

The menu is a modern take on traditional Mexican food, including vegetarian and vegan options. I tried the margarita (of course), and had gone in craving nachos. Sadly, they're not on the menu, so I went with the queso fundito.

The margarita got it just right, icy, tart, salty, sweet, strong but not overpowering. Others at my table raved about the prickly pear one. I got a taste and found it was also very good, sweeter and more refreshing.

The queso fundido was quite good, and popular with the table. The house-made warm soft corn tortillas were amazing.

I'll make a point to go back to Xaco Taco. I'm intrigued by the fried avocado taco, and still regret not trying the Mexican sweet corn.
