Events ~ Rhode Island Comic Con ~ Providence
Another Rhode Island Comic Con has come and gone, and if you missed it, you missed a lot.
Comic Con doesn't only appeal to the stereotypical "fandom" of Star Wars, Star Trek, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Rocky Horror, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and so on, though they and so many more were all well-represented. Fans of professional wrestling, and current tv shows like Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, Gotham, Law & Order: SVU, American Horror Story, Arrow, would find plenty to be excited about.
There were celebrity guests from all the above, as well as from mainstream pop culture, like Tony Danza (Taxi) and Billy Zane (Titanic), actors from The Office. Kiefer Sutherland (24). Chances are, if you liked a movie or tv show, you'd find someone you want to meet.
Guests held discussion panels on subjects from behind-the-scenes of tv and movies, to comedy, to literacy with LeVar Burton. Local publishers held workshops on writing and drawing.
Even if you don't meet your hero(ine) in person, the cosplay game is solid.
Cosplay isn't just about the costumes, either. Outfits like 501st New England Garrison, Rebel Legion, Pink Heals RI, Homes for Our Troops, Ocean State Ghostbusters, New England Brethren of Pirates, Calm Passion, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. New England, the Tardis Table for Epilepsy Foundation New England, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Thundermist Health and so many others were raising funds for charities around Rhode Island and the rest of New England.
Because it's a Comic Con, there were dozens of comic artists and writers, including talent from Rhode Island. I picked up volume 2 of Rhode Warrior and am super excited to see what our heroine is up to.
And finally, folks, the shopping. If you can dream it, someone probably made it with a geeky theme.
