1. Tell us about your work
I create unique jewelry from sterling silver and varying stones and found objects. Each piece is designed by myself and hand fabricated in my studio in Warwick. I am still finding my creative voice on this silversmithing journey so I offer many different styles an designs that swirl around in my head.
2. Is there a story behind the name of your business?
Cady is my last name, but my late uncle Dann Cady was also a RI based jeweler and sometimes I feel that he's with me on this endeavor, which is why I decided to go with my last name.
3. How did you come to be a professional artist/crafter/designer?
When I was ten I made my first pendant from a nickel I had smashed flat with a rock. My passion only grew from there! I had worked on several small collections myself and then I enrolled in continuing education classes at RISD. I took several classes on jewelry design and fabrication and after my first classes I was hooked. I found that I absolutely loved manipulating metal in all different ways, I even find it therapeutic. Then I found myself with too much jewelry. Then I decided to open up an Etsy shop to try and sell some of my pieces so I could continue to do more metal working. Each of my sales goes towards buying more silver, saw blades and solder.
4. Where do you draw your inspiration?
I find inspiration from many areas of my life. My grandmother was a painter, and my uncle a jeweler and I find myself drawing inspiration from their work. And as with anyone else I am inspired by the different places I visit. The beach is one place I have always felt inspired since I was a little girl, and that still stands true today. I still love finding shells or beach treasures to use in my work. In addition to the beach, I find cemeteries so inspiring as well. I love sitting amongst the gravestones and taking in all their intricate carvings. I could explore cemeteries for hours.
5. What’s your favorite item to create?
I have such a hard time picking a favorite, I guess I would have to go with pendants, but I have been enjoying challenging myself with lockets lately.
6. What’s your best seller?
My best seller is my third eye choker!
7. How long have you been in Rhode Island?
I was born in Rhode Island and I've been here for 24 years.
8. What do you {heart} about Rhode Island?
My favorite thing about Rhode Island is the summertime. The state is so beautiful and there's so much to do!
9. Favorite place to take out-of-towners?
I like taking out-of-towners to get a Del's Lemonade and to Bevertail.
10. Any advice for new/wannabe makers?
My advice would be to just be true to your own artistic vision! Create whatever visions are swirling around in your head and you'll do fine!
