1. Tell us about your work
I create custom illustrated & designed letterpress printed paper products. From enchanted forests to pirate robots & underwater seascapes, I create customized one-of-a-kind birth announcements & wedding invitations fit for the avant-garde.
2. How did you come to be a professional artist/crafter/designer?
I went to Rhode Island School of Design from 1994-98. I majored in graphic design, but also did extensive work in hand drawn and cell-painted animation. I started my freelance design business, ColorQuarry, after graduating. Several years later, after the birth of my daughter, i started ColorQuarry Letterpress, working exclusively in letterpress paper products.
3. Where do you draw your inspiration?
Much of my inspiration comes from vintage children's book illustrations, vintage advertising & a lot of the print work from the 'olden days'. I love looking through the old Golden Book Encyclopedias, anything from Olle Eksell, old Penguin book covers & most vintage children's craft books i find at Savers!
4. What’s your favorite item to create?
I honestly love working on both birth announcements & wedding invitations! mostly its just fun to get to know people and then create a custom piece that best fits them. (I've managed to stay in touch with a lot of my previous clients!)
5. What’s your best seller?
I have a wedding invitation template, where i customize it with an image of the actual location of your wedding. thats been really popular, since its partly customized but not as pricey as doing a custom design from scratch. heres a couple of different examples of it: www.etsy.com/listing/190400855/customized-location-letterpress-wedding?r... and www.etsy.com/listing/211997747/rustic-autumn-customized-location?ref=sho...
6. How long have you been in Rhode Island?
Since 94 when i started RISD! I lived one year in Boston and one in western Mass but almost 20 year in total!
7. What do you {heart} about Rhode Island?
So many things! I love, in no particular order: the beaches (especially winter walks with my family on the beach), the woods (Arcadia & Snake Den!), Providence (i lived there for most of my 20 years) and all the good restaurants there, the community of friends/artists I still have in RI (mostly RISD grads i went to school with), and the snow (waiting for it this year)!
8. Please include anything else you’d like to add:
If you're interested in ordering a wedding invitation or birth announcement, email me about a quote! i'd love to get more RI-based clients, as most of my work is out of state & overseas!
