Quite by accident, my friend G and I stumbled over The Beef Barn in our monthly quest to try a new restaurant together. The place we had planned to go was closed on Sunday, and the Beef Barn appeared as we continued down the road looking for other options.

We're so glad we did!

First of all, the place is adorable. It's got a huge stone wall,

as well as counter service,

a main dining room and three specialty dining rooms, the Garden Shed, and the Silo

We ate in the Silo, where there are half a dozen tiny tables for two. I wondered if the wait staff would find us, but our server was there quickly to take our order.

I had their specialty, the roast beef sandwich, and G had a couple of cheeseburgers. We both had fries.

The food arrived quickly, and was very good. The meat in both the burgers and roast beef was juicy and pink. The fries were thick and crisp. I was happy to find that there was malt vinegar available for the fries, and that I was able to request horseradish for my sandwich. The waitress also pointed out the barbecue sauce on the table, which I tried. It was good; tart with a slight zing of spice that wasn't too hot.

The prices were so good (and the portions so reasonable) that we decided to try dessert: Boston Cream Pie and Grapenut Pudding. The cake in the Boston was fresh and moist, the custard sturdy, and able to support the weight of the top layer of cake. The Grapenut pudding was more of a custard, heavy on the cinnamon and Grapenuts, but still very good.

It's apparently a popular spot for families with young children, and it's really set up for them, with lots of  stuffed animals, a toy train and fake chickens in cages in the Coop. But it's also charming for adults, too. The food is good, and very reasonably priced.

I'll take the girls there to see what they think, and G is already planning a trip there with his parents when they come to visit. Definitely a winner.
