1. Tell us about your work I loved creating art ever since I can remember, as a child I was always making crafts & gifts for people. I took 4 years of just drawing in high school art, loved it and became very proficient in drawing just in black and white. I found colored pencil in college and it became my medium of choice. Colored pencil takes time and patience to create detailed drawings, it isn't the most common form of art and I enjoy showing my viewers a different form of art. I liked to experiment with different types of surfaces on which to work with colored pencil, the latest surface I'm enjoying is working on wood. I also teach adult classes and workshops in colored pencil and enjoy seeing my students progress and in some instances, even start showing their work.
2. How did you come to be a professional artist/crafter? I studied art at Massachusetts College of Art and graduated with a BFA with a concentration in printmaking. While I was taking courses, I discovered my love for colored pencils and using them to create illustrative and detailed drawings. Currently I am a signature member of the Colored Pencil Society of America and I show my work at Spring Bull Gallery in Newport and Bristol Art Gallery in Bristol as well a other regional and national exhibits.
3. Where do you draw your inspiration? My inspiration comes from the world around me. I look at every day objects and scenes and choose something interesting or unique about what I see to portray to my viewers. I find myself drawn to details and the play of light and shadows. I also like bright colors and don't often use grays or even browns, I prefer to mix colors to create colorful grays.
4. What’s your favorite item to make? colored pencil paintings, in which I combine solvent with colored pencil on a gessoed, sanded surface and create more of a painting than a drawing. The solvent melts the pencil and allows it to be applied like paint on the surface.
5. What’s your best seller? My red candy apple pieces
6. How long have you been in Rhode Island? I have lived in Rhode Island since 1972
7. What do you {heart} about Rhode Island? The ocean and the bays all around us. I love being close to the water, walking on the beaches in all seasons, boating in the summer. I also enjoy the unique flavor of each town, whether historical or modern.
8. Please include anything else you’d like to add: The Rhode Island Blood Center chose me as their artist of the year for 2012, I have created a piece of artwork which will be made into prints and given to blood donors who donate blood four times per year. My artwork will be unveiled at the Blood Center's press conference at Ts Restaurant, Post Road, East Greenwich on Thursday, March 1st at 9:30 a.m. Anyone is welcome to attend.
