Sights ~ Roger Williams Park Zoo ~ Providence
Roger Williams Park Zoo
1000 Elmwood Ave.
Providence, Rhode Island
Mothers Day weekend was beautiful, and Bear and I spent a good part of Saturday at the Roger Williams Park Zoo. Admission is free for Providence residents with ID on the first Saturday of the month in the summertime.

We had a great time visiting the animals.
The giraffes were out

and the elephants were having a bath (I wish my pictures had turned out)
it was feeding time for the penguins

the camels were napping

and there was a really cool living statue

The Zoo was founded in 1872 (making it the 3rd oldest zoo in the country), mostly with local animals but they did have anteaters. Today it has more than 1,000 animals representing more than 130 species. In 1980, it became the first accredited zoo in New England.
It's a great way to spend a day or a few hours.
When we lived in Providence in 1982-83 there was a polar bear exhibit that for me was the highlight of the zoo. It was a thrill to stand at the underwater viewing window and see that giant white paw plant against the glass as the bear pushed off to swim to the far side of the tank. The exhibit closed for renovations in 2005 and is still closed today due to lack of funding. There are other planned expansions in the works as well.
